Dog Time

I wrote this poem two days ago about our dog Rosie who just turned 14 on December 27th.  I have been feeling especially tender toward our old girl knowing that each day she is with us is a gift and there will only be so many more days.  Today I took her to the vet for what we thought was a tooth problem and it turns out she has a tumor in her mouth, cancer. Coincidence?  I think not.

Dog Time

She’s right here.
Breathing
and alive,
my old dog.

Stay awhile
sweet friend.
Our time together
is not done.

Steady soul,
companion.
Connected
in this time
and perhaps
in a time before
and perhaps in
a time
yet to come.

Stay a bit longer
sweet friend.
We have a bit
more love to share
before you go.
