We had our first big snow of the season over night – about 12 inches by the looks of the snow piled up on the bird bath. I’ve been hibernating inside making a pot of chicken vegetable soup but this Morning Dove is staying warm by puffing out its feathers to trap in it’s body heat.
What a pretty little bird. He looks different from the doves I see here.

They look quite different all puffed up. You can see much more of their underneath feathers that are much darker than the light brown ones on the top.

Amazing how much warmth birds can generate that way. We recently had 3 stray chickens that got locked out of the chicken coop overnight (someone didn’t count them). In the morning, after a 10 degree F night, they were clustered together in the open field and I thought for sure they had frozen to death. But, they began moving and seemed just fine after being reunited with their flock.

Glad your chickens are okay! That is amazing they made it through the night. Three of them huddled together probably helped.
